One day after a stressed out shift, I decided to take a drive to my favorite coffee shop. Gazing through the window of the car, my eyes caught a glimpse of a destitute and scanty clad man. I believe he was insane. There was a Trash bin on the pavement and he was inspecting it deeply stooping towards its inner side. He was pulling out the garbage and was gulping the left over of food found in it.
For a moment, I was shocked to see the ghastly plight of that man. I wondered the whole day long, why is it that the curse of poverty has stricken some human beings on earth. Why is it that no human has the power to eradicate poverty?
The terrible thought brooded over all day long. Contemplating over it the whole night, I dozed being weary at dawn.
The next day, I was conversing with a friend of mine in US. He said, "Oh Remya, I'm all sad and depressed". His girl friend ditched him a day ago and he feels heart broken. Being sumptuous, he was yelling out that he was aloof and devoid of love and care. I consoled him to the best as I can.
Abrupt lightning of thoughts ran through my mind. Vision of the destitute man struck like a hard blow. Its time, I wake up and make my friend realize that he should no more be sad. .
I asked him three questions:
1. Are you naked?
2. Can't you afford meals three times a day?
3. Do you have a shelter to protect yourselves from heat and rain?.
1. Are you naked?
2. Can't you afford meals three times a day?
3. Do you have a shelter to protect yourselves from heat and rain?.
"I'm wearing the best outfit which commoners can't afford", that was his answer for my first question. As of for your second and third question, "Yes I can afford to eat anything I want and I live in a spacious condo". "Why do you ask such irrelevant questions to me now?” he was fretting and fuming over my words.
I said, "Calm down and relax dear". I wanted you to realize that how God is taking care of you so well. He asked, "But how?" “Listen”, I said in a subtle tone, "Can't you afford to have the best clothes, best cuisines and best abode?” "Do you have any sickness/diseases tormenting you?” "Don't you travel around in a luxury car?”
Whenever you are sad, think of those classes of people who are impoverished, under privileged and fighting with their sickness to live a healthy life. Think think and think of those people begging on streets to eat a meal for the day, the ones laboring in scorching heat and chilling winter to earn their daily bread, ones sleeping in parks and on pavements since they don't own a shelter to rest their head.
Gasping a sigh of relief, my friend said, "You helped me the best way to overcome such hard time I had. I feel so HAPPY now. Thanks Remya!!!". Yes, this is true and what I have written is applicable for all those human beings sad for silly reasons.
My secret to "HAPPINESS" is that I think of people who are suffering, destitute and poverty-stricken, whenever I feel sad. In a jiffy, I will be happy because, I am so grateful to GOD for giving me everything I want in life and keeping me alive, safe and secure in this cruel world. Try to help the poor, needy, be compassionate to the weary and over burdened fellow human beings in this world so that for every virtue of yours, you will receive abundant blessings from GOD and will feel the real happiness.

HI Remya,
I loved loved loved this post! It is so true that the secret to happiness is knowing that God is looking at you and taking care of you in the most subtle ways. Just knowing this fact can make your life so much more happier and peaceful.
Thank you for having such a big and soft heart to actualy see and feel the way you do.
What an honor it is for me to be your friend.
Lots of Love
Zeenat.
I appreciated this post because I try to employ this in my life. While I don't have the best of everything, I do have everything I need. I know that that can only be attributed to a loving God who cares for my needs.
Even the man who was eating garbage, his needs were being met to a degree because it is sad to think that many are even more impoverished than he.
I know particularly here in the US we are very unappreciative of what we have. I pray constantly for the promised time when no one will ever be hungry or lacking again.
Thank you Remya for this thought provoking post!
Your thoughts are inspiring on these hard economical times especially when things do not look to be the way we like keep the good spirit and the good blog.

Zeen, Toya and Armando,
Thank you so much for your kind feedback on my post. I just wanted to convey the message that as long as we are secure and alive in this world, we should stop crying for things that are beyond our reach and for silly reasons.
Hi Remya
This is a good example of how we are driven to look at what is lacking in our lives instead of looking at the prosperity that we have.
Even people we think might not have much prosperity can have more that we think. In the end prosperity comes from within and that is in the end what you pointed out. If we cannot see what we have, we actually do not have it.
Love Wilma
Thank you Wilma for passing by. Yes, you said it right. We need to learn to be happy with small things in life. It makes you content and keeps you going without stress.
@remya..
wonderfully put. Keep writing :)
Kudos!
Counting your blessings instead of the adverse things that happen in our lives would really remove sadness in our lives. Suffering and failure is where many dwells and forgets the good things they have when they are faced with challenges. Great blog. Keep it up.
Dear Remya
Many people are below the poverty line and they are the garbage pickers to survive. They do not have to be always insane they might be too poor to know any better. We find those poorest of the poor all over the World these days. You have made an excellent observation. And the article is a good example of that.
PS: Thank you for visiting my blog.
I have enjoyed yours; it is a very beautiful blog!
Best wishes,
Zuzanna

"Desire is the root cause of all sorrows" .....Yes, still we need more, even after being blessed with all goods in life.. That's the worst part of being "human". As Remya said, think think about people around you and THANK god for all that what we have :) Well said Remz ....
Hi Remya,I sooo loved this post.I am really negative at things sometimes.I feel sad and angry and question God when things don't go my way but I never thought about other people who are deprived and poor.I am happy I came across your blog else I would hv never gotten a chance to reason things out.Thanxx a lot.U actually made my day:)
Thanks Sushila. You are right, often when things don't work the way we want we question god asking "Why does it happen only to me?". Its wise to think of the deprived, underprivileged and poor who has more sufferings than you have! You will always be happy then and will only thank god instead of questioning him.
what a touchy post i came across..
i can say ur post is a true inspiration in this hard time..

Hey a very nice post.... simply moved me... you are really a good writer... regarding ur friend thats natural for a person who lost his love.. I felt the same..but soon time changed me...
we can eradicate poverty....... eradicate corruption..
educating everyone..
but our people are more concerned about their own lives..their own needs...
in such a place poverty cannot be eradicated..
